**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, venturing into unfamiliar territory was definitely outside my comfort zone. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize an academic experience filled with personal development, hurdles, and a multitude of unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered early on was the process of making friends. Many new students experience significant anxiety regarding this aspect of university life, and I was no different. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to today, and I can assert that I’ve built some of the most wonderful friendships I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve encountered here have transformed into my second family, both within my department and across the university. All it required was for me to step out of my comfort zone and initiate small conversations with fellow students who were in a similar situation.

What have I taken away from this experience? First, it’s always beneficial to take that initial step, even when it feels daunting. If you’re not prepared immediately, that’s perfectly fine—there are ample icebreaker events and avenues to meet others. Secondly, the best approach is to remain authentic. With such a varied community of students, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major hurdle was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of course material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second seemed even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you’re falling short.

What supported me during this phase was the understanding that everyone faces similar challenges. If you’re struggling with a concept, it’s likely others are too. The essential lesson here was to seek assistance—be it from classmates or faculty members. This is perhaps the most crucial piece of wisdom I gained in my first year: don’t hesitate to ask for help.

### The Significance of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department have been exceptional. They are genuinely invested in our success and understand the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open and actively sought our feedback on any issues we faced.

While I did not fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Taking that initiative to seek help proved invaluable. Early in the year, I also assumed the responsibility of a year well-being representative, which helped me forge strong connections with faculty members. This experience illuminated how approachable and supportive they are, and I highly encourage others to utilize the resources and guidance available. One can never have too much support!

### Insights Gained

Looking back on the past year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I experienced prior to starting university—and even during my time here—was frequently unfounded. There are numerous support systems available, from staff to fellow students, to aid in overcoming challenges.

This year has shown me that I am never truly isolated. It has taught me how to balance stress from exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment. Most importantly, it has reminded me of the importance of taking risks, whether it’s stepping out of my room to socialize, reaching out for help when necessary, or embracing new opportunities.

As I contemplate the future, I’m eager to continue evolving, learning, and maximizing my experience at Imperial.
