**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to begin my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who has always been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unknown pushed me far beyond my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on an academic year packed with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I can recognize just how much I’ve acquired and how far I’ve progressed.
### Surmounting the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting facets of commencing university was the anxiety of forming new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be one of your major concerns as well. On my first day in the student housing, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the most significant friendships of my life here at Imperial.
These connections didn’t occur in an instant but rather developed through small actions—brief chats with individuals who were equally new and apprehensive as I was. I’ve discovered a second family here, and it all initiated with that first courageous step. My greatest lesson? Don’t shy away from putting yourself out there right from the start. If you’re not prepared immediately, that’s perfectly okay—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and opportunities to engage with others. Most importantly, simply be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Confronting the Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the academic expectations of university was another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university-level coursework was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when faced with tough material, especially when it appears that those around you have it all figured out.
What aided me immensely was the realization that I was not alone. Everyone was facing similar challenges, and likely, if I didn’t grasp something, others didn’t either. The crux was learning to reach out for assistance—whether from peers or faculty. This, in my opinion, is one of the most crucial takeaways from my first year: don’t hesitate to seek help.
### The Significance of Supportive Staff
Speaking of assistance, the staff in the Materials department have been remarkable. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open and were always ready to respond to our concerns.
While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the year’s end, I regret not doing so earlier. Taking on the role of a well-being representative early on was one of the proactive steps I took, and it turned out to be a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to establish connections with staff members, which became invaluable. There are countless ways to engage with staff, and I highly encourage seizing these opportunities. The assistance they provide can be transformative.
### Insights Gained
Looking back on my first year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the wide array of support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly on my own. This year has instructed me on how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and fun.
If there’s one piece of advice I’d offer to anyone beginning their university experience, it’s this: take the plunge. Whether it’s introducing yourself to a new person, asking for assistance when necessary, or engaging in activities, these small actions can facilitate remarkable growth and unforgettable moments.
