**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who had always been introverted and cautious, stepping into this new chapter was quite daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year enriched with personal growth, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences, I recognize just how impactful this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the expectation of forging new friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might relate to those feelings. On my inaugural day in student housing, I spent hours isolated in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known. These connections have turned into a second family for me, both within my program and throughout the university.

What enabled me to push past this initial fear? Taking that first step of courage. Even if you’re uncertain, there will be numerous social events and chances to engage with others. I also came to appreciate the importance of being authentic. In such a diverse community at Imperial, you are sure to find others who resonate with your passions and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Difficulties

Adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material was another challenge I faced. The transition from A-levels to university was marked, and the shift from the first term to the second proved to be even more arduous. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and doubt your capabilities when observing your peers studying or succeeding.

What helped me navigate those moments of uncertainty was the understanding that everyone experiences similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, there’s a strong likelihood others do too. The essential step is to seek assistance—be it from classmates or faculty. Learning how to ask for support is arguably the most significant skill you can cultivate in your first year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials Science and Engineering department have been outstanding. They earnestly wish for student success and are compassionate towards the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept channels of communication open and consistently offered encouragement.

While I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral care available until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Taking the initiative to serve as a year well-being representative marked another step forward for me at the start of the year. This role allowed me to foster connections with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. Whether through formal duties or informal interactions, establishing rapport with your lecturers and tutors is one of the best choices you can make. My main lesson? Utilize the assistance and resources at your disposal—you can never have too much support.

### Insights Gained

This year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before beginning university—and even throughout the year—was frequently baseless. With a wealth of support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with joyful and fulfilling experiences.

Looking back, I can see how much I’ve matured—not just academically, but personally as well. Starting university may appear to be plunging into the unknown, but in time, you’ll find your balance and flourish.
