**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was consumed by feelings of anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and cautious, venturing into the unknown seemed daunting. Now, reflecting on a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment, I can appreciate how much I’ve grown and the progress I’ve made.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might resonate as a primary concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, just days before the official start of term, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet anyone. Fast forward to now, I can proudly say I’ve made some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—people who feel like an extended family.
What aided me? Taking gradual steps. Engaging in casual conversations with others who were just as anxious made a significant difference. I discovered that it’s always beneficial to take that first step at the beginning of the year, even if it seems intimidating. And if you’re not prepared to dive in immediately, that’s okay—there are ample icebreaker activities and chances to meet others. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse group of people at university, you will undoubtedly find those who connect with you.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adjusting to the heightened workload and the intricacies of the course content. The shift from A-levels to university was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second term proved to be even more difficult. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others studying and assume they have everything under control.
What helped me during those tough times was the reminder that I wasn’t alone. Everyone faced similar challenges, and if I found something perplexing, there was a good chance that others did as well. The most worthwhile lesson I learned in my first year was the importance of seeking help. Whether it’s from fellow students or instructors, reaching out for assistance is essential.
### Supportive Faculty and Well-Being Services
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department have been phenomenal. They genuinely care about our success and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open channels of communication with us and provided various types of support.
Even though I didn’t fully engage with the well-being services until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Taking on the role of a well-being representative for my year was one of the bold moves I made at the start of the year, and it turned out to be an enriching experience. It allowed me to forge relationships with faculty members, which became invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with the faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support systems at your disposal—there’s no such thing as too much help.
### Insights Gained
In retrospect, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt prior to beginning university, and even during my time here, was frequently unfounded. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned to juggle the demands of exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and fun, and I’ve grown in ways I never anticipated.
For anyone preparing to embark on their university adventure, remember that it’s completely normal to feel anxious. Take those bold steps, embrace the obstacles, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when needed. You’ll emerge stronger, just as I have.
