**Musings on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the cusp of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and shy, plunging into this new experience felt akin to jumping into the unknown. Now that I reflect on an academic year filled with personal growth, challenges, and happiness, I can contemplate what I’ve gained and my current position.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting parts of starting university was the task of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this could be one of your foremost worries as well. On my initial day in student housing, just days before the term officially commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to emerge and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

These bonds have morphed into a sort of second family for me, and all it required was a modicum of casual conversation with individuals experiencing the same apprehensions. My most significant insight? Take that initiative at the outset of the year. Even if you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, do not fret—numerous icebreaker events and chances to mingle are available. Most critically, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter others who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Struggles

Another significant challenge was acclimating to the academic demands and the intricacy of the course content. The transition from A-levels to university was pronounced, and the shift from the first term to the second seemed even tougher. It’s all too easy to become overwhelmed and question your capabilities, especially when observing peers who appear to grasp everything effortlessly.

A crucial reminder that aided me was that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re confused about something, it’s likely that there are others feeling just as lost. The essential approach is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to request help may be the most vital skill to cultivate during your initial year.

### The Encouraging Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is remarkable. The instructors and tutors genuinely care about student success and show understanding towards the obstacles faced. They maintain openness throughout the year and are consistently ready to address our worries.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until late in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. One of the most beneficial choices I made was serving as a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to form connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are various avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Fully leverage the support and resources provided—you can never receive too much help!

### Insights Gained

This year has illuminated the fact that the apprehensions I experienced—both prior to and during university—were frequently misplaced. An abundance of support exists, whether from faculty or fellow students, to assist you in addressing challenges. I’ve recognized that I am never genuinely alone, and I have learned to sustain a balance between having fun and managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.

Reflecting on my journey, I can see the extent of my growth, and I am eager to continue on this path. If you’re about to embark on your university journey, remember: take that plunge, seek assistance, and embrace the opportunities that present themselves.
