**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was on the verge of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into the depths of university life seemed overwhelming. Now, as I reflect on an academic year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment, I can’t help but contemplate the insights I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.
### Confronting the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the start of university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, this may be one of your greatest concerns as well. On my first day in student housing, just days ahead of the term, I spent an entire day sequestered in my room, too terrified to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to the present, and I can assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life.
The pivotal moment occurred when I chose to take a small step and initiate conversations with others who were experiencing similar feelings. Gradually, I discovered my second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual chit-chat. So, what did I discover? Taking that initial step at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re not prepared or comfortable right away, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with fellow students. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Overcoming Academic Hurdles
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was distinct, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It wasn’t always easy to remain confident, particularly when I observed peers studying and felt as though I was lagging behind.
What assisted me during those tough times was the realization that my classmates were experiencing similar struggles. If I didn’t grasp a concept, there was a good chance others didn’t either. The most crucial lesson I learned in my first year was to seek help—be it from fellow students or faculty. Don’t hesitate to reach out; teamwork and support are vital in managing the demands of university life.
### Establishing Rapport with Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department have been remarkable. They sincerely desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they maintained open lines of communication, addressing our concerns and providing direction.
Though I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral resources available until later in the year, I wish I had sought them out earlier. Early on, I took a chance and became a well-being representative for my year, which allowed me to create connections with faculty members. This experience proved to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support and resources available to you—you can never receive too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Looking back on this year, I’ve come to realize that many of the worries I experienced prior to and during university were unfounded. With the plentiful support from faculty and fellow students, I was never truly alone. This year has taught me how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while balancing joy and fun.
To those beginning their university adventure: embrace the trials, take those leaps of faith, and remember that support is always within reach. You’ll develop in ways you never anticipated, and you might just enjoy the time of your life along the way.
