**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was about to embark on my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into such a substantial life change felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with development, challenges, and ample enjoyment, I can assert it has been a life-changing experience. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. For many incoming students, this is a primary concern when beginning university, and I was no different. On my move-in day, just days prior to the term’s start, I spent the entire day in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I’m thrilled to share that I’ve cultivated some of the most rewarding friendships in my life. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both from my course and throughout the university—have become like a second family to me. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others who felt just as anxious as I did.

What did I discover? Taking that first step at the onset of the year is essential. If you’re not quite ready or feel uncomfortable at first, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to bond with others. Most importantly, I learned to be authentic. With such a rich and diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adjusting to the Academic Demands

Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the course materials. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when amidst accomplished classmates.

What assisted me during this period was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If I was grappling with a concept, it was likely that others were finding it challenging as well. The essential lesson? Don’t shy away from seeking assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or faculty, asking for help is one of the most beneficial skills you can nurture during your first year.

### Cultivating Connections with Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the staff in the Materials department have been outstanding. They are genuinely invested in students’ success and are sympathetic to the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open, addressing our worries and providing guidance.

I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available to us until the year’s end, and I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a courageous step by becoming a year well-being representative. This role facilitated building connections with staff members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are various ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Utilize the support offered to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I felt before entering university—and even throughout the year—was often misplaced. With an array of support options from both staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. This year has taught me how to manage the pressure from exams and deadlines while still savoring moments of happiness and enjoyment.

Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a journey of self-exploration, development, and connection. To anyone gearing up to commence university, remember: take that leap, be genuine, and don’t hesitate to reach out for help. You are capable of this!
