**Insights from My First Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and self-doubt as I prepared to begin my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Diving into the unfamiliar was a frightening prospect for someone who had always been introverted and timid. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with development, challenges, and unforgettable experiences, I can appreciate how transformative this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forging friendships. For many incoming students, this represents one of the greatest sources of anxiety when starting university, and I was no different. On my initial day in student housing, a few days prior to the official start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others.

Now, I can proudly state that I’ve cultivated some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. These connections have become my second family at Imperial, all beginning with small, casual chats with individuals who were just as apprehensive as I was.

What have I learned from this? Taking that first leap of faith at the year’s onset is essential. If you’re not prepared or don’t feel at ease immediately, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to meet people. Most importantly, be true to yourself. With such a diverse student community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Shift

Adjusting to the academic workload and rigors was another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more daunting. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when surrounded by high-performing peers.

What assisted me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re finding it tough to grasp a topic, it’s likely that others are as well. The key is to seek assistance. This might be the most valuable lesson I gained in my first year—don’t hesitate to reach out to your peers or the teaching staff for help.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is remarkable. The lecturers and support staff genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. They keep channels of communication open throughout the year, addressing student concerns and offering guidance.

While I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, I regret not doing so sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was a significant step for me, but it ended up being one of the best choices I made. It allowed me to forge relationships with staff members, which proved invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal encounters, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the best actions you can take for yourself. My primary takeaway? Take full advantage of the support systems available—there’s no such thing as too much help.

### Key Lessons

In summary, this year has shown me that the anxieties and fears I experienced—both prior to and during university—were often unfounded. With the abundant support from staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned to balance stressors like exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and fun, and I’ve grown in ways I never anticipated.

If you’re on the verge of starting your own university adventure, keep this in mind: take that leap, be authentic, and don’t hesitate to ask for help. You’ve got this!
