**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been quiet and introverted, stepping into the unknown felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it was filled not only with obstacles but also with significant personal development, education, and enjoyment. So, what lessons did this pivotal year impart, and where do I find myself today?

### Venturing Beyond My Comfort Zone: Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered was forging friendships. For numerous new students, this ranks among the top worries when commencing university, and I was no exception. On my initial day in student housing, just days before the official start of term, I spent the whole day retreating to my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others.

Fast forward to the present, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both within my program and outside of it. It all commenced with casual conversations and linking up with those who felt similarly.

What did I take away? Taking that first step at the beginning of the year is vital. If you’re hesitant or uncertain, no need to stress—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Most importantly, simply be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Confronting Academic Obstacles
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the escalated complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more significant. It’s effortless to feel inundated or question your competence, particularly when observing others studying and wondering if you measure up.

What aided me through this was the understanding that everyone shares the same experience. If you find it challenging to grasp a concept, it’s likely others are experiencing that too. The secret is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or the academic staff. This is arguably the most crucial lesson I absorbed during my first year: don’t shy away from requesting support.

### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department have been phenomenal. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open, addressing our worries and offering guidance.

Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I wish I had earlier. At the outset, I took a risk by becoming a year well-being representative, which helped me build rapport with faculty members. This proved to be an invaluable experience. There are various ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your university journey. My most important takeaway? Make the most of the support systems available to you—you can never receive too much help!

### Insights Gained and Future Prospects
In summary, my first year has revealed to me that the anxiety I felt before entering university—and even throughout the year—was mostly unwarranted. With the extensive support from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to balance the pressure of examinations and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.

This year has been a path of development, and I’m eager to discover what the next chapter at Imperial holds for me.
