**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was just about to begin my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, diving into this new experience felt extremely intimidating. Now, as I reflect on an academic year rich with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment, I can consider what I’ve gained and how much I’ve progressed.
### Conquering the Anxieties of Friendship
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the onset of university was the task of making new friends. If you’re a future student reading this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entirety of the day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly affirm that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. These connections, developed both within my academic program and throughout the university, have come to feel like a second family to me. It all began with casual conversations and bonding with others who shared my experience.
So, what have I taken away from this? Taking that first step at the beginning of the year is vital. If you don’t feel ready to jump in straight away, that’s perfectly fine—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Above all, be true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing Academic Hurdles
Another major challenge was getting used to the rigorous workload and the heightened complexity of the subjects. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the leap from the first term to the second felt even more demanding. It’s easy to succumb to feelings of inadequacy when witnessing others study and questioning whether you measure up.
What eased my way during these times was recognizing that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find yourself confused about a topic, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well. The essential takeaway here is to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson I picked up during my first year—don’t be afraid to reach out to classmates or teaching staff for help.
### Connecting with Faculty
Speaking of faculty, I cannot stress enough how supportive and welcoming the Materials department is. The professors and tutors genuinely wish to see students thrive and understand the challenges we confront. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open and worked diligently to address student issues.
Even though I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. One of the proactive steps I took early on was to become a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to foster relationships with faculty members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. Whether through official roles or informal exchanges, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Make the most of the resources and support systems offered—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the past year, I’ve come to realize that much of the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was largely unfounded. With the extensive array of support options available, ranging from faculty to fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve developed skills to manage the pressures of exams and deadlines while also making room for enjoyable experiences, and I’ve gained confidence in myself along the way.
To anyone preparing to embark on their university adventure: welcome the challenges, take those leaps of faith, and remember that help is always within reach.
