**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was coming. I was on the brink of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and shy, embarking on this new phase felt quite intimidating. Reflecting now, I realize that the past year has been filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

### Confronting the Challenge of Building Friendships

One of the most daunting elements of starting university was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might relate. On my initial day at my student accommodation, a few days prior to the official start of term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to emerge and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced.

The breakthrough arrived when I made the choice to step beyond my comfort zone and engage in casual conversations with others who were feeling just as nervous as I was. Over time, these brief interactions developed into significant friendships, and I now truly feel I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial.

What have I taken away from this journey? First, it’s definitely worthwhile to take that first step at the year’s beginning. If you don’t feel ready or comfortable at first, don’t fret—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to connect with fellow students. Second, the most beneficial thing you can do is remain authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major hurdle was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the curriculum. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and moving from the first term to the second was even more challenging. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when witnessing others study and seemingly thrive.

What aided me during this period was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar feelings. If you find a concept difficult, there are likely others struggling too. The secret is to seek help. This is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year—don’t shy away from reaching out to your classmates or instructors.

### Encouragement from Faculty and Support Services

Speaking of faculty, I can’t stress enough how helpful the Materials department has been. The lecturers and tutors genuinely desire for students to succeed, and they recognize the hurdles we encounter. They keep communication channels open with us throughout the year and are always ready to assist.

Though I didn’t take full advantage of pastoral support services until later in the year, I regret not utilizing them earlier. Initially, I took a chance by becoming a Year Well-being Representative, which enabled me to forge connections with staff members. This experience proved to be tremendously beneficial, as it enhanced my sense of connection and backing.

My recommendation? Utilize the resources and assistance at your disposal. Whether it’s academic aid, pastoral support, or simply getting acquainted with your lecturers, these relationships can significantly enrich your university experience.

### Insights Gained

Ultimately, this year has shown me that much of the anxiety I felt prior to and during the university experience was largely misplaced. With a vast array of support available from both faculty and fellow students, I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone. More importantly, I’ve learned how to manage the pressures of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and enjoyment.

Reflecting on this journey, I can see how much I’ve evolved since that apprehensive first day in October. University has truly been a path of growth, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead.
