**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, dread, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has consistently been shy and introverted, venturing into the unknown was daunting. Now, reflecting on my first academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, hurdles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. What insights have I gained from this journey, and where do I currently find myself?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered at the onset of university was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be one of your primary worries as well. On my initial day in student housing, just before the semester commenced, I covertly spent an entire day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can confidently state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced.
These connections didn’t develop instantaneously, but they began with small actions—like striking up casual conversations with others who were equally anxious. Over time, I discovered a second family here at Imperial, both within my course and throughout the university.
What did this teach me? Taking that first leap of faith is essential. Even if you’re not quite prepared to jump in right away, don’t worry—there are abundant icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re destined to meet people who reflect your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened difficulty of the content. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your skills when observing others studying and worrying if you’re on track.
What aided me in this journey was understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, likely, others are encountering the same issues. The crucial takeaway is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. This became perhaps the most significant lesson I learned during my initial year: don’t hold back from asking for support when it’s needed.
### The Value of Supportive Staff
Speaking of assistance, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about students’ success and are acutely aware of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained transparent communication with us and demonstrated empathy toward our experiences.
Though I didn’t fully engage the pastoral support available until late in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative at the beginning of the year was one of the bold steps I took, and it ended up being profoundly rewarding. It enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved invaluable.
There are various ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and I highly suggest making the most of these opportunities. Whether through formal positions or informal conversations, cultivating these relationships can significantly impact your experience. My key takeaway? Always feel empowered to utilize the resources and support mechanisms available to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
In reflecting on my first year, I’ve recognized that the apprehension I felt—both prior to beginning university and throughout the year—was often exaggerated. With the extensive range of support options accessible from both staff and peers, help is always within reach.
This year has illustrated that I’m never truly isolated, even during stressful periods like exams and deadlines. It’s also taught me how to balance diligence with enjoyment, fully embracing both the obstacles and the joyful experiences that university life offers.
As I progress, I look forward to discovering what the upcoming chapters of my university experience will hold. For anyone set to embark on their adventure, remember: take that leap, be true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to ask for help.
