**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I started a journey that brought with it a mix of anxious excitement. I was about to commence my studies in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted, the thought of venturing into the unfamiliar was quite intimidating. Now, reflecting upon an academic year rich with personal development, trials, and unforgettable experiences, I can appreciate how life-changing this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was the challenge of forging new friendships. If you’re a future student, this might rank high on your list of worries as well. I clearly recall my first day in residence. I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to step outside and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve cultivated some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

These relationships didn’t materialize instantly, but rather started with small gestures—such as engaging in light conversation with others who were equally new to the scene. Over time, these interactions evolved into a supportive community here at Imperial. My key takeaway? Make the effort early on. Even if it feels overwhelming, there will be numerous social events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, always be true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and beliefs.

### Addressing Academic Challenges

Adapting to the academic workload at university posed another significant challenge. The shift from A-levels to university-level studies was tough, and the leap from the first to the second term felt even more substantial. It’s easy to feel lost or question your capabilities when you observe others studying intensively and appearing to thrive.

What helped me through these periods of uncertainty was understanding that I was not alone. Everyone was encountering similar challenges, and if I struggled with a concept, it was likely that others did too. The solution to overcoming this hurdle was straightforward: seek assistance. Whether from your classmates or faculty members, reaching out for help can truly change the game.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the staff in the Materials Science department are remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and empathetically understand the hurdles we face. Throughout the academic year, they kept communication lines open, making sure we felt acknowledged and supported.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered to me until the year was nearly over, but in retrospect, I wish I had sought it out earlier. One of the best choices I made was stepping into the role of a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to cultivate connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. Whether through official roles or informal encounters, building relationships with the staff is one of the best decisions you can make for your personal development. My recommendation? Utilize the resources and support mechanisms available to you—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

Looking back, this year has imparted countless lessons. It has made me realize that the anxiety I experienced—both before entering university and throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. With the extensive support from staff and peers, I was never truly alone. I’ve mastered the art of balancing the pressures from exams and deadlines with moments of joy and leisure. Most importantly, I’ve learned to welcome challenges and take bold steps, understanding that growth often lies beyond discomfort.

As I continue on my university journey, I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead. If you’re about to embark on your own journey at Imperial, remember that although the path may seem overwhelming, it is also rife with opportunities for development, connections, and unforgettable memories.
