**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the brink of beginning my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has typically been introverted and reserved, plunging into the unknown was a significant departure from my comfort zone. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and abundant enjoyment, I can assess what I’ve acquired and the distance I’ve traveled.
### Conquering the Apprehension of Forming Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. This concern is a common one for many incoming students, and I was no different. On my first day in the student residence, just prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve made some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known.
Imperial has evolved into a second family for me, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small chats with others who shared similar feelings. My biggest insight? Take that leap at the beginning of the year. Even if you don’t feel prepared, numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to mingle will be available. Above all, just be yourself. With such a varied community within the program and university, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Demand
Adapting to the workload and complexity of university-level material was another challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the progression from the first to the second term felt even steeper. It’s common to feel inundated and question your capabilities when surrounded by highly accomplished peers. Nevertheless, one realization that aided me was understanding that everyone was navigating similar challenges. If I struggled to grasp a concept, it was highly likely that others were as well.
The crucial takeaway here is to seek assistance. This may be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Whether it’s reaching out to classmates or asking for advice from faculty, requesting help is a mark of strength, not a deficiency.
### Assistance from Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science team at Imperial is remarkable. They are genuinely invested in the success of their students and show empathy towards the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept lines of communication open and provided support whenever necessary.
Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral care available until the end of the year, I wish I had reached out sooner. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative was one of the proactive steps I took early on, which turned out to be an excellent choice. It facilitated connections with faculty members that proved invaluable. Whether through official roles or informal conversations, getting acquainted with the faculty is one of the best actions you can take for yourself. My recommendation? Utilize the support and resources made available—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
This year has revealed to me that the anxiety I experienced before commencing university, and even throughout the year, was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive support offered by both staff and peers, I was never truly solitary. I’ve grasped how to juggle stress from exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and accomplishment.
Reflecting back, I perceive a year filled with personal development, new friendships, and significant lessons. If you’re about to embark on your own university journey, know that it’s entirely normal to feel nervous. Take that leap, embrace the hurdles, and remember that assistance is always just a step away.
