**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the future. I was about to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being a naturally shy and reserved individual, stepping into unfamiliar territory was far from comfortable for me. Now, reflecting on a year of academic development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments, I can assert that it was a period of significant change. But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. For many new students, this is a primary concern regarding the commencement of university, and I was no different. On my inaugural day in student housing, just prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day retreating in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I am pleased to declare that I’ve cultivated some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
The solution lay in taking small initiatives—beginning with light conversation with fellow newcomers. As time went on, these exchanges transformed into significant relationships, and I now see my university friends as a second family. My strongest message? Don’t hesitate to take that initial step, even if it feels intimidating. If you’re not quite prepared, fear not—numerous icebreaker events and opportunities exist to help you bond with others. Most crucially, embrace your true self. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re certain to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adjusting to the demands of the coursework and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was palpable, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more striking. It’s easy to feel daunted or doubt your skills when observing others studying and apparently excelling.
What assisted me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone was facing similar struggles. If I encountered difficulty, I reminded myself that others were probably grappling with the same challenges. The most crucial lesson I absorbed was to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. This straightforward yet impactful action significantly enhanced my confidence and comprehension.
### Cultivating Relationships with Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is truly outstanding. The lecturers and support staff are genuinely invested in students’ success and understand the hurdles we encounter. They keep communication channels open throughout the year, addressing our issues and providing guidance.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support resources until later in the year, I regret not reaching out earlier. Initially, I took a significant step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to establish connections with faculty members. This proved to be immensely beneficial. Whether through formal roles or informal chats, getting to know the faculty is one of the best actions you can take for yourself. My recommendation? Utilize the support and resources available—you can never receive too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced—both before embarking on my university journey and throughout the academic year—was often misplaced. With the multitude of support options from faculty and peers, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to juggle stress from examinations and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and amusement, and I’ve developed greatly as an individual.
To anyone gearing up for their university experience, understand that it’s perfectly natural to feel anxious. But also recognize that with time, support, and a readiness to take small risks, you will find your balance and flourish.
