**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty as I set out on my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who has always been somewhat introverted, plunging into university life felt daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences, I can affirm that it’s been a life-changing adventure. So, what insights have I gained, and what’s my current status?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the onset of university was forming connections. If you’re an incoming student, this could very well be a significant worry for you as well. On my initial day in student housing, mere days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly declare that I’ve developed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve encountered here have become my second family, and all it required was stepping out of my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others who were equally anxious.

What have I learned? Taking that first brave step at the beginning of the year is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to interact with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied community across the program and university, you’re sure to discover those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Adjustment
Another major obstacle was acclimating to the workload and academic intensity. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the jump from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your skills when you observe others studying and apparently thriving.

What assisted me in navigating this transition was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are too. The vital takeaway is to seek assistance. This may represent the most crucial lesson I garnered during my first year. Don’t hesitate to connect with your classmates or the teaching staff—they’re there to help you.

### Fostering Relationships with Faculty
On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department are truly outstanding. They genuinely want students to succeed and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept channels of communication open, addressing our concerns and offering guidance.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. One of the best choices I made was stepping into the role of a year well-being representative. This opportunity allowed me to cultivate connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. Whether through formal positions or casual exchanges, getting to know the staff is one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself. My main takeaway? Utilize the support and resources at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
As I reflect on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the anxieties I experienced—both prior to and during university—were unfounded. With the plethora of support available from staff and fellow students, there’s always someone you can rely on. This year has shown me that I’m not truly alone and that it’s possible to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.

Looking forward, I’m eager to discover what the upcoming year brings. If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious. Embrace the challenges, take those leaps of faith, and keep in mind—you’ve got this!
