**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the brink of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been quite introverted and reserved, diving headfirst into new experiences was far from what I was used to. Now, reflecting on a year of academic growth, challenges, and enjoyment, I can certainly assert that it’s been a life-changing adventure. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating issues I encountered was the process of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might resonate with those feelings. On my first day at student housing, just before classes commenced, I isolated myself in my room all day, too daunted to go out and meet anyone. Fast forward to now, and I’m thrilled to say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had.
At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—friends who truly enhance this journey. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating brief dialogues with others who were equally anxious.
So, what have I gathered? Take that first step at the beginning of the year. Even if you’re apprehensive, numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others will arise. Above all, be authentic. Given the vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another considerable obstacle was adapting to the academic demands and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second proved even more challenging. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities while surrounded by exceptional peers.
What benefited me the most was the acknowledgment that everyone faces similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, chances are your classmates are as well. The most crucial aspect is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. This became perhaps the most vital lesson I gleaned during my first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is remarkable. They earnestly desire for students to thrive and show understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they demonstrated open lines of communication and extended support whenever necessary.
While I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral care until later in the year, I wish I had initiated that sooner. One brave step I made early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be a priceless experience. Whether through official duties or informal chats, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the best choices you can make for yourself.
My greatest lesson? Utilize the support systems available to you. There’s no such thing as excess aid, and the resources exist for a purpose.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the year, I’ve learned that the anxieties I experienced—both preceding the start of university and throughout the year—were frequently unwarranted. With the backing of faculty and peers, those fears became manageable. I’ve discovered that I’m not truly alone in this journey and that it’s indeed possible to relish university life even amid the demands of exams and deadlines.
As I continue onward, I feel grateful for the challenges and personal growth I’ve undergone. To anyone on the verge of starting their university adventure: take the plunge, seek help, and seize every chance to develop.
