**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt as I prepared to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase felt intimidating. Reflecting back, I recognize a year that has been transformative—brimming with growth, obstacles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I currently find myself?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was the fear of making new connections. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely a concern you also share. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known.

The turning point occurred when I made the decision to step out of my comfort zone and engage in small conversations with others who were equally hesitant. Gradually, these interactions evolved into significant friendships, and now I regard my peers here at Imperial as my extended family. What did I take from this experience? Firstly, it’s valuable to make that initial effort, even when it feels awkward. Secondly, there’s no need to put on a façade—just be authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re certain to connect with individuals who share your interests and values. And if you’re not ready immediately, don’t fret—there are an abundance of icebreaker events and chances to meet people throughout the year.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of university coursework was another major hurdle. The shift from A-levels to university was undoubtedly noticeable, and the transition from the first term to the subsequent one felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing others studying and worrying about keeping pace.

What assisted me in navigating this was the realization that everyone faces similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, chances are, others are experiencing the same. The essential element is to ask for assistance—whether from your classmates or the teaching staff. Cultivating the ability to seek support is arguably the most crucial skill you can develop in your first year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials Science and Engineering department have been exceptional. They sincerely care about student success and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and were always willing to address our issues.

Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had done so sooner. One of the best choices I made was to assume the position of a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are countless ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My most significant takeaway? Utilize the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
As I reflect on my first year, I realize that many of the fears I held—both prior to and during my university experience—were baseless. With the ample support from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year taught me how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and connection.

Ultimately, university is a journey of development, and while challenges are unavoidable, they also present opportunities for learning and growth. For anyone about to embark on this journey, my guidance is straightforward: take the leap, ask for help, and wholeheartedly embrace the experience.
