### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been introverted and cautious, plunging into the unknown was far from familiar territory for me. Now, as I look back on the previous academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what precisely did this year impart to me, and where do I stand now?
#### Conquering the Challenge of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating elements of beginning university was establishing friendships. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, you might share that concern. I certainly did. On my first day in student housing, a few days prior to classes officially commencing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to today, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever formed. The individuals I’ve connected with here feel like an extended family, both in my program and across campus. All it took was stepping outside of my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with others who were equally looking to connect.
So, what did I discover? I found that taking a leap of faith at the beginning of the year is invariably rewarding. If you don’t feel prepared immediately, that’s perfectly fine—there will be numerous icebreaker initiatives and chances to meet fellow students. Most crucially, I learned to simply be myself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
#### Navigating the Academic Transition
Another major challenge was acclimating to the academic workload and the intricacies of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. Keeping confidence was not always straightforward, particularly when I observed others studying and felt as though I wasn’t keeping pace.
What aided me in these times was the realization that I was not alone. Everyone was grappling with similar hurdles, and if I was puzzled by something, chances were that others were as well. The pivotal takeaway? Never hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from your classmates or the teaching personnel, reaching out for help is one of the most vital abilities you can cultivate in your first year.
#### The Value of Supportive Staff
Talking about staff, the Materials Science department at Imperial is phenomenal. The instructors and mentors genuinely desire for students to thrive and show compassion towards the challenges we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication throughout the year and are consistently ready to address our issues.
Though I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until late in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. One of the best choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. Whether through formal responsibilities or casual interactions, building relationships with your instructors and mentors is among the best actions you can take for your own benefit. My most significant takeaway? Fully utilize the support systems accessible to you—there’s no such thing as too much assistance!
#### Lessons Learned
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the broad spectrum of support options available from faculty and fellow students, I was never truly on my own. I’ve discovered how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with joyful moments and fun, and I’ve evolved in ways I never expected.
As I progress, I’m eager to see what the next chapter of my university adventure brings. If you’re about to commence your own journey, remember: take that leap, seek help when needed, and welcome every chance for growth.
