**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with personal growth, challenges, and enjoyable experiences, I recognize the profound transformation I underwent. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting elements of entering university was facing the challenge of forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may share similar feelings. On my very first day in student housing, just prior to the term kicking off, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly affirm that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known.
The breakthrough came when I took that first step and engaged in small talk with individuals who were equally nervous. Gradually, these interactions blossomed into a supportive community at Imperial. My recommendation? Embrace your true self. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to connect with others who share your interests and principles. And if you’re hesitant to jump right in, fear not—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to help you gradually acclimate to socializing.
### Addressing the Scholarly Challenges
Adapting to the academic demands and complexity of the coursework was another major obstacle. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s perfectly normal to feel overwhelmed or question your competencies, especially when it seems like others are handling everything seamlessly.
What proved invaluable for me was the reminder that we’re all facing similar challenges. If you find yourself struggling with a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The most significant lesson I gained was the importance of seeking help—whether from fellow students or faculty. Asking for assistance is not a sign of fragility; it’s an essential skill that will benefit you throughout your academic journey.
### Fostering Connections with Faculty
On the subject of support, the staff in the Materials department are truly remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and show compassion towards the challenges we encounter. They maintain proactive communication with us throughout the year and are always ready to assist.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the mentoring support until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Early on, I took a courageous step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to establish a rapport with faculty members. This experience turned out to be profoundly beneficial, as familiarizing yourself with staff can significantly influence your academic life. My most valuable insight? Utilize the support that is available to you—it exists for a reason, and having ample help is always a positive.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I felt—both before commencing university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the extensive support options provided by staff and peers, I realized I was never truly alone. I also recognized how to juggle the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.
Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a journey of development, self-discovery, and building connections. If you’re about to embark on your own university path, understand that feeling nervous is perfectly normal, but don’t allow it to hinder your progress. Take that leap—you might be amazed at how much you can accomplish.
