**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, venturing into the unknown felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with growth, challenges, and enjoyable experiences, I can appreciate the knowledge I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.
### Confronting the Challenge of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the need to make friends. If you’re a future student reading this, you might share the same concern. On my first day at my student residence, just a few days before classes kicked off, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known.
The breakthrough occurred when I initiated small conversations with others who were experiencing the same feelings. Over time, these chats evolved into substantial friendships, and I now have a second family here at Imperial. What did I take away from this? Taking that initial step to reach out to others is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared immediately, that’s okay—there will be abundant ice-breaker activities and chances to socialize. Most importantly, simply be yourself. With such a diverse array of personalities and backgrounds at university, you’re sure to find people who connect with you.
### Adapting to the Academic Challenge
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more demanding. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your skills, especially when observing others study and assuming they’re more successful than you.
What aided me in persevering was the realization that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you find something confusing, the likelihood is that others are facing the same difficulty. The essential strategy is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty members. Learning to ask for support is one of the most important lessons I’ve absorbed during my first year.
### The Role of Supportive Staff
The faculty in the Materials Science department have been outstanding. They genuinely care about student success and understand the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open, addressing our concerns and providing support.
While I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Early in the year, I made the decision to become a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to form connections with faculty, which turned out to be a valuable experience. There are numerous ways to engage with your lecturers and tutors, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My key lesson? Make the most of the support that’s available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the variety of support options offered by staff and peers, I was never genuinely alone. I learned how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while savoring moments of joy and enjoyment.
As I progress, I am thankful for the personal development, the friendships I’ve cultivated, and the insights I’ve gained. If you’re on the verge of beginning your own university adventure, remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious—but also recognize that you will navigate your own path, just as I did.
