**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed by nerves, trepidation, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and cautious, plunging into such a major life transformation felt daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimful of development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I can’t help but contemplate the lessons I’ve acquired and the progress I’ve made.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. It’s one of the most daunting elements of initiating this new chapter, and if you’re a prospective student perusing this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. I vividly remember my first day settling into student housing—the semester hadn’t even commenced, and I spent the entire day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to anyone.

Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve encountered here have come to feel like my second family, and it all began with simple gestures—like engaging in casual conversations with others who shared my nervousness.

So, what insight did I gain? Taking that first step is immensely rewarding. Even if you don’t feel completely prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most notably, just stay true to yourself. With such a diverse group of people at Imperial, you’re sure to discover those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Obstacles

Another challenge I faced was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more daunting. It’s easy to feel inundated and question your abilities, especially when you observe others studying and seemingly thriving.

What assisted me in overcoming those moments of uncertainty was the realization that I wasn’t alone. Everyone was navigating the same challenges, and if I was struggling with something, it was likely that others were too. The essential lesson here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from your classmates or the faculty, reaching out for help is one of the most vital skills to cultivate in your first year.

### The Supportive Faculty

Speaking of assistance, I cannot emphasize enough how remarkable the staff in the Materials department are. They genuinely desire to see students succeed and possess deep empathy for the challenges we confront. Throughout the year, they maintained an open line of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing guidance.

I wish I had availed myself of the pastoral support sooner in the year, but I’m grateful that I eventually did. One of the best decisions I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be priceless. There are ample opportunities to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Utilize the support offered to you—you can never have an excess of help!

### Key Insights

In retrospect, this year has revealed that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive support available from staff and fellow students, I recognized that I was never genuinely alone. I also learned to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and laughter.

Embarking on university is a substantial leap, and feeling anxious is completely natural. However, with a bit of bravery, a readiness to seek assistance, and an open mindset, you’ll locate your balance and thrive.
