**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been timid and introverted, plunging into the bustling world of university life appeared daunting. Now, as I reflect on an academic year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I recognize just how much I’ve developed and how far I’ve progressed.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing

One of the most nerve-wracking parts of starting university was forming friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, just days prior to the beginning of term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

The crucial step was taking that initial plunge—starting casual conversations with others who were experiencing the same situation. Gradually, those first interactions blossomed into enduring friendships. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all beginning with a simple “hello.”

What I’ve realized is that stepping beyond your comfort zone early on is worthwhile. If you’re not entirely ready, don’t fret—there’s an abundance of icebreaker events and ways to meet new people. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to connect with individuals who share your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another hurdle I encountered was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s common to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing others studying, wondering if you’re keeping pace.

What aided me was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re finding it tough to grasp a concept, it’s likely others are too. The most valuable action you can take is to seek assistance. This may very well be the most significant lesson I learned during my first year—don’t hold back from reaching out to fellow students or the teaching staff.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of faculty, the support from the Materials Department has been remarkable. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in students’ success and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the academic year, addressing any concerns we may have.

I didn’t fully engage with the available pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. Taking the initiative to ask for help or interact with staff can lead to substantial improvements. Early in the year, I chose to step outside my comfort zone by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role helped me foster relationships with staff members, which has been invaluable.

There are various ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Take full advantage of the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

This year has revealed to me that the apprehension I felt before commencing university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. Thanks to the extensive support available from both staff and fellow students, I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone.

I’ve also learned how to balance the demands of exams and deadlines while still enjoying moments of happiness and fun. University life is a journey of personal development; although it presents its challenges, it is undeniably a rewarding experience.

Looking back, I am proud of the distance I’ve traveled since that anxious fresher hiding in their room. If you’re about to begin your own university adventure, understand that feeling uncertain is perfectly normal—but also recognize that you possess everything necessary to thrive.
