**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was anxious, fearful, and riddled with uncertainty as I prepared to begin my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unknown felt overwhelming. Looking back now, I see a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the onset of university was meeting new people. If you’re an incoming student, this might also be a concern for you. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, far too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly affirm that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. My classmates have become like a second family to me, both within my program and throughout the university. All it took was stepping out of my comfort zone and initiating small chats with others who were equally apprehensive.
What did I discover from this? The most important step is to make that move early on. If you’re not entirely ready or at ease, that’s perfectly fine—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Above all, just be yourself. With such an eclectic student population, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Another major challenge was adapting to the rigorous workload and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your capabilities when in the company of high-achieving classmates.
What assisted me in maneuvering through this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, others likely are as well. The most beneficial thing you can do is seek assistance—whether from your peers or your instructors. Learning to ask for help is maybe the most critical skill you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Support and Connection
On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department have been remarkable. They genuinely desire for students to excel and are understanding regarding the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, responding to our worries and providing direction.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until the year’s end, and I regret not doing so earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the bold moves I made early on, and ultimately it proved to be a fulfilling experience. It gave me the chance to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and I strongly suggest seizing these opportunities. The guidance they extend can be life-changing.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my initial year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I experienced—both before commencing university and throughout the year—was often unnecessary. With the extensive support from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me how to manage the pressures from exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and excitement.
So, to anyone on the brink of embarking on their university adventure: welcome the challenges, make those bold moves, and remember that assistance is always within reach.
