**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A decade ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was a stark departure from my typical shy and introverted nature. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a period of significant personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered early in my journey was forming friendships. For many future students, this is often a primary concern regarding beginning university life. I vividly recall my first day of moving into accommodation—I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to my peers. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced.

The secret to cultivating these relationships was daring to make that first move. It began with casual conversations with fellow newcomers who felt just as apprehensive as I did. Gradually, these exchanges flourished into friendships that now feel akin to a second family. My recommendation? Be courageous and take that step at the beginning of the year. If you’re not quite prepared from the outset, don’t stress—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse environment at Imperial, you’re destined to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Addressing Academic Hurdles

Adapting to the academic demands and level of difficulty presented another major challenge. The shift from A-levels to university was palpable, and the transition between the first and second terms felt even more pronounced. It’s all too easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others studying, wondering if you are keeping pace.

What aided me in managing this was understanding that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are experiencing the same thing. The most crucial lesson I took away from my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, reaching out can be transformative.

### Assistance from Faculty

On the subject of faculty, the support network within the Materials department is remarkable. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in your success and are understanding of the challenges students encounter. They consistently maintain open lines of communication throughout the year, addressing any issues we may face.

Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I wish I had initiated contact earlier. One of the finest choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, proving to be invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal interactions, getting to know the faculty is one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself. My greatest piece of advice here? Fully utilize the support that is accessible to you—there’s no such thing as too much help.

### Knowledge Gained

As I reflect on my first year, I realize that much of the apprehension I felt—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unfounded. There’s a wealth of support available, whether from faculty or fellow students, to assist you in overcoming any obstacles. I’ve also discovered that I am never truly alone, and it is feasible to find happiness and equilibrium even amidst the stresses of exams and deadlines.

As I look to the future, I am eager to continue my growth, education, and to fully embrace my time at Imperial. To anyone on the brink of starting their own university adventure, remember: take that step, seek help, and revel in the experience.
