**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unknown felt incredibly intimidating. Looking back now, I recognize a year of transformation—filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and what is my current state?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the outset was the challenge of making friends. For many upcoming students, this represents one of the foremost anxieties about beginning university, and I was no different. On my very first day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both in my program and throughout the university—have grown to feel like a second family to me. All it took was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small exchanges with people who were equally apprehensive.
What did I gain from this experience? Taking that crucial first step at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared or at ease immediately, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker functions and chances to connect with others. Above all, I learned that being true to yourself is vital. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to discover others who align with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Hurdles
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was a significant transition, and the leap from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to doubt your abilities in such an environment, particularly when you observe others studying and feel like you’re lagging behind.
What assisted me in surmounting this was realizing that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely that others are wrestling with it as well. The most crucial lesson I internalized during my first year was the importance of seeking help—whether from fellow students or faculty. Do not hesitate to reach out; collaboration and support are priceless.
### Cultivating Relationships with Faculty
On the topic of support, the faculty members in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely desire for their students to succeed and understand the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication and were always eager to address our concerns.
While I didn’t fully embrace the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the bold steps I made at the start, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. This position facilitated my building of relationships with faculty members, which proved to be tremendously beneficial. There are countless avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My central takeaway here? Make the most of the support and resources accessible to you—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I felt—both prior to beginning university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the vast array of support offered by staff and fellow students, I was never truly alone. I learned to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and laughter. Most importantly, I discovered that stepping outside my comfort zone frequently leads to the most fulfilling experiences.
As I get ready for the next chapter of my university journey, I feel thankful for the lessons I’ve absorbed and the individuals I’ve met along the way. To anyone preparing to embark on their own university experience: embrace the trials, take the plunge, and remember—you are never alone.
