**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Composed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was swarmed with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has consistently been shy and introverted, plunging into this new phase felt quite overwhelming. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most daunting parts of commencing university was the prospect of forming friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, it’s probably a concern on your mind too. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently state that I have formed some of the most cherished friendships of my life.
These bonds have evolved into a second family for me at Imperial, beginning with simple steps—like striking up casual conversations with fellow students who were just as anxious. The most significant lesson I took away? Take that initial leap early. Even if you’re hesitant or uncomfortable, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet others. And above all, just be your authentic self. With such a varied community at university, you’ll definitely find those who connect with you.
### Addressing Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the academic demands and the heightened difficulty of university coursework posed another major challenge. The shift from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, particularly when witnessing others appear to flourish.
What assisted me in navigating these challenges was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar situations. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The essential thing is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most beneficial skill you can cultivate during your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been amazing. They truly care about student success and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication and were consistently ready to address our concerns.
Though I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. At the beginning of the year, I made the decision to become a well-being representative, which allowed me to foster relationships with staff. This proved to be an invaluable experience. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway? Utilize the resources and support at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Looking back over the past year, I’ve come to realize that many of the apprehensions I had—both prior to and during university—were unwarranted. With the extensive support options provided by faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has equipped me with techniques to manage stress from exams and deadlines while also enjoying moments of happiness and fun.
Ultimately, university represents a journey of growth, and while it can be daunting at times, it also presents an opportunity to unveil your strengths, forge meaningful connections, and create lasting memories.
