**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced a whirlwind of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the path ahead. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unknown felt intimidating. Yet now, as I reflect on the academic year that has passed, I recognize a time of tremendous personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was the task of making friends. Starting university can be overwhelming, and if you’re a future student reading this, it may rank among your top concerns. On my first day in student housing, just before the semester kicked off, I spent an entire day in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve connected with here—both within my program and throughout the university—have become much like a second family to me. All it took was a few casual conversations with others who were equally apprehensive.
What did I take away from this? Taking that first step of courage at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared or comfortable right off the bat, don’t fret—there will be countless icebreaker gatherings and opportunities to bond with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied community of students, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the course workload and the intricacies of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was quite evident, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more strenuous. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you’re measuring up.
What aided me in persevering was the realization that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, others likely are as well. The essential lesson is to seek assistance. This could very well be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year—reach out to your classmates and don’t hesitate to talk to the faculty.
### The Importance of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in our success and understand the challenges we encounter. They foster open communication with us throughout the year, addressing any issues we might have.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster relationships with faculty members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My greatest realization? Make the most of the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting back, this year has revealed to me that the anxiety I felt—both prior to and during my time at university—was often unwarranted. With the extensive support provided by staff and fellow students, I discovered that I was never alone. I also learned how to navigate the pressures of exams and deadlines while still finding opportunities for joy and enjoyment.
Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a transformative experience. It has been about growth, resilience, and learning to welcome the unknown. To anyone on the verge of starting their own university journey: take the plunge, seek help, and most importantly, relish the adventure!
