**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I braced myself to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, stepping into this new phase felt overwhelmingly daunting. Now, as I reflect on an academic year rich in personal growth, challenges, and enjoyable experiences, I can appreciate just how life-changing this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I currently stand?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered early on was forming friendships. For many incoming students, this concern looms large, and I was no different. On my inaugural day at the student residence, a few days ahead of the start of classes, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had. My classmates have come to feel like a second family to me, both within the university environment and my specific course. The pivotal moment? Taking that courageous step to engage in casual conversation with others who were feeling just as nervous.
What insights did I gather from this? Firstly, it’s valuable to step outside your comfort zone early, even if it feels intimidating. If you’re not ready to engage immediately, that’s alright—there are countless icebreaker events and opportunities to meet new people. Secondly, the most important thing you can do is to be authentic. With such a diverse community at university, you’re sure to meet those who share your passions and ideals.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the heightened workload and the intricacies of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the leap from the first term to the second was even clearer. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when surrounded by accomplished peers.
What assisted me in overcoming this was realizing that everyone is experiencing the same difficulties. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial step is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty members. This is arguably the most essential skill to cultivate in your first year: don’t hold back in asking for help.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of support, one of the standout aspects of my journey has been the extraordinary faculty in the Materials department. They genuinely care about student success and show understanding towards the challenges we encounter. Throughout this year, they maintained open communication channels and offered invaluable resources to guide us through our difficulties.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until late in the year, and I regret not utilizing it sooner. Assuming the role of a well-being representative for my year was one of the proactive moves I made at the beginning of the year, and it has proven to be incredibly fulfilling. It enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, something I highly encourage all students to pursue. Developing relationships with staff can be incredibly beneficial, and there are numerous chances to do so.
The greatest lesson here? Make the most of the support systems that are at your disposal. Whether it’s academic assistance or personal guidance, you can never have too much support.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I felt—both before embarking on university life and during my time here—was frequently unfounded. With the extensive support available from faculty and fellow students, I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone. More importantly, I’ve figured out how to navigate the pressures of exams and deadlines while still enjoying moments of happiness and fun.
Embarking on university life is a leap into the unknown, yet it serves as a chance for growth, bonding, and self-exploration. If you’re about to start your own adventure, remember that the challenges you encounter will mold you in ways you might not yet foresee—and that you’ll emerge even stronger on the other side.
