**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was coming. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar was a terrifying thought. Now, as I look back on the previous academic year, I see a path of personal development, obstacles, and many unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. For many incoming students, this is a significant worry when starting college, and I was likewise affected. On my first day in student housing, just days ahead of the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to emerge and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had. The individuals I’ve encountered here have become my extended family, both within my program and across the campus. All it required was a dash of casual conversation and the recognition that everyone else was feeling similarly.
What wisdom did I gain from this experience? First, make that jump at the beginning of the year. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be ample icebreaker functions and chances to meet others. Second, embrace your true self. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to connect with people who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands and the heightened difficulty of university-level subjects was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the move from the first to the second term felt even tougher. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed and doubt your capabilities when you’re among high-achieving classmates.
What aided me during this time was the realization that everyone was dealing with similar hurdles. If I struggled with a concept, it was likely that others were too. The essential lesson here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, asking for help is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### Aid from the Materials Department
Regarding support, the faculty in the Materials Science and Engineering department are outstanding. They genuinely care about student success and understand the obstacles we face. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our worries and offering guidance.
Although I didn’t fully access the pastoral support on offer until the year’s end, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Early in the year, I made the decision to serve as a well-being representative, which helped me establish connections with staff members. This turned out to be an invaluable experience. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the available support networks—no one can have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I experienced—both before commencing university and during my initial term—was mostly unwarranted. With the abundant support provided by staff and fellow students, I came to understand that I was never truly alone. I also discovered how to navigate the pressures of exams and deadlines while savoring moments of joy and enthusiasm.
In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a transformative journey. It has been a year of development, strength, and connection, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead as I continue my path in Materials Science and Engineering.
