**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was enveloped in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone naturally shy and introverted, diving into this new experience was far beyond my usual comfort zone. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with growth, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment, I can appreciate just how life-changing this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. This is a major concern for many incoming students, and I certainly felt the same way. On my first day of settling into my accommodation, just days before the term kicked off, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. Here at Imperial, and within my degree program, I’ve discovered a second family. It merely required me to step beyond my comfort zone and initiate small talks with fellow students who shared similar feelings.
What did I grasp? I learned that taking the plunge at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy initially, that’s completely fine! There are countless ice-breaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I found the value in just being myself. With such a vibrant community of students, you will undoubtedly encounter others who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major obstacle was acclimating to the workload and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was quite pronounced, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more demanding. It’s common to feel swamped or question your capabilities in such an environment, particularly when observing others studying and feeling as if you’re lagging behind.
What assisted me in overcoming this was realizing that everyone shares a similar experience. If you are confused about a topic, there’s a high likelihood that others are equally perplexed. The crucial thing is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to request help is perhaps the most essential skill to acquire in your first year.
### The Significance of Support and Connection
Speaking of faculty, I cannot emphasize enough how remarkable the Materials department staff are. They genuinely care about students’ success and show understanding toward the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing support.
I didn’t take full advantage of the available pastoral support until the year’s end, and I regret not doing it sooner. Taking the initiative to engage with staff was one of the best choices I made. Early in the year, I became a representative for year well-being, which opened doors for building relationships with staff members. This was invaluable, and I encourage others to seize similar opportunities. Whether through formal roles or informal chats, getting familiar with your lecturers and support staff can have a significant impact.
The main lesson here? Don’t hesitate to utilize the resources and assistance offered to you. There’s no such thing as excessive support!
### Insights Gained
Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I experienced—both before starting university and throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the vast array of support options available from staff and fellow students, there is always someone to reach out to.
This year has shown me that I’m never truly isolated, even during overwhelming moments. It’s also taught me how to balance the pressures from exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
As I look ahead, I’m thankful for the growth and experiences this year has provided. To anyone gearing up to start their university journey: take that leap, be your authentic self, and don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. You’ve got this!
