**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nervousness, apprehension, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my first year as a student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been somewhat introverted and cautious, venturing into the unfamiliar was quite beyond my usual comfort level. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year that was not just filled with challenges but also rich in personal growth and unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my present perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered early on was the challenge of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might share similar fears. On my initial day moving into student housing, I spent the whole day secluding myself in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Now, looking back, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had—friends who have become like a second family.
How did such a metamorphosis occur? It began with small efforts, like striking up casual conversations with others who were feeling equally uneasy. I discovered that taking initiative at the beginning of the year is rewarding. If you aren’t prepared immediately, don’t worry—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with fellow students. Most importantly, I realized that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse community at university, you will certainly find others who align with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the heightened academic workload and the increased content complexity. Transitioning from A-levels to university study was tough, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more daunting. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when seeing others engaged in their studies and apparently thriving.
What aided me in navigating this experience was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you find yourself struggling with something, it’s likely that others are too. The best guidance I can provide is to seek help—whether it’s from fellow students or the teaching faculty. Learning to ask for assistance is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, I cannot stress enough how phenomenal the Materials department is. The lecturers and tutors genuinely want their students to succeed and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year and are always willing to assist.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the year’s end, I regret not doing so earlier. Taking on the position of a year well-being representative was a bold step for me, but it proved to be one of my best choices. It enabled me to form connections with staff, which became invaluable. Whether through formal roles or casual encounters, getting to know your lecturers and tutors can significantly impact your experience. My main takeaway? Make the most of the support systems available—you can never receive too much help.
### Key Takeaways
Looking back on this past year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and during my first term—was frequently unwarranted. With ample support from faculty and classmates, I was never truly alone. This year has taught me how to manage the pressures of exams and deadlines while also incorporating moments of enjoyment and fun.
To anyone about to embark on their university adventure: tackle the challenges, take those leaps of faith, and don’t hesitate to utilize the support around you. You will grow in ways you never thought possible, and you might just experience the most enjoyable time of your life along the way.
