**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been timid and introverted, leaping into this new phase felt daunting. However, looking back now, I recognize a year that was transformative—filled with personal development, challenges, and abundant happiness. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
### Embracing New Connections: Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might resonate with this concern. On my inaugural day in student housing, just a few days before classes started, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room, too anxious to step out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can confidently assert that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had.
These bonds didn’t come into being overnight; rather, they began with small gestures—casual chats with individuals who were equally new and apprehensive. As time passed, these connections developed into what I now regard as a second family. My major takeaway? Take that early plunge. Even if you feel unprepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. And above all, just be yourself. In such a diverse environment at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who share your passions and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands and complexities was yet another challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more formidable. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when witnessing others studying and seemingly thriving.
What aided me through this was the recognition that I wasn’t alone. If I struggled with a concept, it was likely that others were facing similar challenges. The crucial lesson was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most vital skill I cultivated throughout my first year.
### Supportive Faculty and Pastoral Care
In terms of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained transparent communication with us, addressing our worries and providing insights.
Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. One of the best choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which proved immensely beneficial. There are countless ways to engage with faculty, and I highly recommend taking advantage of these opportunities. My key takeaway here? Don’t hesitate to utilize the resources and support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve learned that the anxiety I felt before and during university was often unwarranted. With a treasure trove of support available—from faculty, peers, and the larger university community—there’s always help when you need it. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to harmonize the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of joy and fun.
As I contemplate my first year, I take pride in how far I’ve advanced. From conquering my initial anxieties to embracing the challenges of university life, this journey has been one of growth, resilience, and connection.
