**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unknown was definitely outside my comfort zone. Reflecting on the past year, I see it as a time of personal development, challenges, and many unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained from this journey, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the onset of university was the task of making friends. If you are an incoming student reading this, it’s probably one of your greatest concerns as well. On my first day settling into my accommodation, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life—friends who have become like a second family to me.
The pivotal moment came when I made the choice to challenge myself to initiate small conversations with others in similar situations. What I discovered from this experience is that diving into social interactions early on is essential. If you don’t feel prepared or comfortable right away, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people will arise. Most importantly, be authentic. With the diverse array of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and beliefs.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was noticeable, and the transition from the first term to the second term appeared even more strenuous. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others studying and wondering if you’re on track.
What aided me in this period was the understanding that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are in the same position. The essential takeaway is to seek assistance—be it from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of assistance, I cannot stress enough how incredible the staff in the Materials department are. They genuinely care about students’ success and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication and provided various forms of support.
While I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral care until later in the year, I wish I’d engaged with it earlier. One proactive step I took early on was becoming a representative for student well-being. This role enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which became invaluable. There are numerous avenues to interact with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway here is to leverage the support available to you—help is always beneficial!
### Insights Gained
Looking back on my first year, I realize that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to commencing university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the vast range of support from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has equipped me with the ability to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while still enjoying moments of happiness and fun.
As I progress, I feel more self-assured and ready to face the challenges that lie ahead. For anyone who is about to embark on their university experience, my message is straightforward: leap forward, be true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to request help. You may be surprised by how much you can evolve in just one year.
