**Contemplations on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had previously been timid and introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar was a formidable task. However, reflecting on an academic year filled with development, hurdles, and numerous unforgettable experiences, I can appreciate how life-changing this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

### Conquering the Anxieties of Making Connections
One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was forging friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you may share similar concerns. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days prior to the official start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can say with certainty that I’ve formed some of the most remarkable friendships of my life. These bonds have evolved into a second family for me, both within my program and throughout the university. The secret? Taking that first step to engage with others. Even if you’re not quite ready, don’t fret—there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to connect.

The greatest takeaway for me has been to just be yourself. With such a varied student community at Imperial, you’re certain to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values. So, take a deep breath and seize the opportunity to meet new faces—you won’t look back in regret.

### Addressing the Academic Shift
Adapting to the rigorous demands of university academics was another major hurdle. The leap from A-levels to university curriculum was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more drastic. It’s all too easy to become daunted or question your capabilities when you observe others appearing to excel.

What aided me the most was realizing that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re grappling with a particular topic, it’s likely that your peers are as well. The most crucial skill I cultivated during my first year was the ability to seek assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or faculty members, requesting help can truly make a difference.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty
On the subject of support, the staff within the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they consistently communicated with us, addressing our worries and offering guidance.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had sought it out sooner. Becoming a year well-being representative was a significant step I took early on, and it proved to be a priceless experience. It facilitated the development of relationships with staff members, which turned out to be immensely helpful.

If I could offer one piece of advice, it would be to utilize the support that is provided to you. Whether it involves academic assistance, pastoral support, or simply getting to know your lecturers, these resources exist to enable your success.

### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that much of the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unnecessary. With the plethora of guidance available from faculty and classmates, I was never genuinely alone.

This past year has taught me how to navigate the stress associated with exams and deadlines while also embracing moments of happiness and self-discovery. It’s been a journey of personal evolution, and I eagerly anticipate what the next phase will bring.

As you prepare to embark on your own university journey, remember: take the plunge, be authentic, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You’re capable of this!
