**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and a sense of fear about what was to come. I was on the verge of embarking on my first year as a student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new chapter felt incredibly daunting. Now that I reflect on the previous academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant development, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Challenge of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating elements of beginning university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re an aspiring student reading this, it’s probably a concern you share as well. On my first day in student housing, just a few days prior to the semester’s start, I spent the whole day in my room, too shy to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I proudly say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had.
The pivotal moment arrived when I made the choice to exit my comfort zone and engage in light conversation with others who were experiencing the same uncertainty. Over time, these interactions blossomed into a second family at Imperial. My most important lesson? Take that step of courage early on. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous social events and chances to connect. More crucially, simply be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re certain to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adjusting to the academic pressures of university was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university-level tasks was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when you witness others who seem to manage everything effortlessly.
What aided me in this transition was the acknowledgment that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re finding something hard to grasp, likely, others are as well. The secret is to reach out for assistance—whether from your classmates or faculty members. Mastering the art of seeking help is arguably the most crucial skill you can develop during your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Staff
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely care about students’ success and understand the challenges we undergo. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open and were always ready to address our needs.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until late in the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. One of the best choices I made was serving as a year well-being representative. This position not only enabled me to connect with faculty but also provided a deeper understanding of the resources available to students. Whether through formal roles or informal conversations, establishing a rapport with your professors and support staff can be incredibly valuable. My recommendation? Make the most of the assistance and guidance available—you can never have too much support!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the year, I realized that many of the fears I harbored—both prior to and during university—were baseless. With the extensive range of support options offered by staff and fellow students, I understood that I was never truly isolated. More importantly, I learned how to juggle academic pressures such as exams and deadlines while also making time for enjoyment and relaxation.
In conclusion, my initial year at Imperial has been a life-changing journey. It has been a path of growth, education, and connections that I will treasure forever. To anyone about to embark on their university adventure soon: welcome the challenges, seek help when necessary, and remember to savor the experience.
