**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new phase felt intimidating. Reflecting on the year now, I recognize it was filled with personal growth, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment. So, what have I gained from this experience, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered early in my journey was forming friendships. For many new students, this is one of the primary concerns about starting university, and I felt no different. On my first evening in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, and within my program, I’ve discovered a second family. It only required stepping beyond my comfort zone and sparking conversations with others who were experiencing similar feelings.
What did this teach me? Taking that crucial first step at the beginning of the year is invaluable. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease immediately, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker activities and opportunities to socialize. Most importantly, I learned to embrace my true self. Surrounded by such a diverse group of individuals across the course and the university, you’re sure to connect with people who share your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
A further major obstacle was adjusting to the demands of the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-level studies to university was evident, and the leap from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It was not always simple to keep faith in myself in such a tough environment, particularly when it appeared that others were managing effortlessly.
What aided me through this was understanding that everyone was facing similar struggles. If I didn’t grasp something, it was quite likely that others were also puzzled. The primary lesson here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from your classmates or faculty, asking for support is among the most essential skills to cultivate during your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of assistance, the staff within the Materials department have been outstanding. They truly desire for students to thrive and are compassionate regarding the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication and offered various kinds of support.
I didn’t completely utilize the available pastoral care until the end of the year, which I regret. At the beginning of the year, I took a significant step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are many opportunities to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience.
My recommendation? Make the most of the support structures accessible to you. Whether it’s academic support or personal care, having help is always valuable.
### Takeaways from the Experience
Reflecting on my first year, I realize that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to beginning university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive range of support options available from faculty and fellow students, assistance is always within reach.
This year has shown me that I’m never genuinely isolated, even in moments of uncertainty. It has also taught me how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and enjoyment.
As I prepare for the upcoming academic year, I feel more assured and enthusiastic about the future. To anyone poised to embark on their own university adventure: take the plunge, welcome the challenges, and remember—you’ve got this!
