**Contemplations on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of commencing my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who has always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new phase felt daunting. Looking back, I realize that this year has been filled with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what have I gained from this year, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most challenging and intimidating obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re a future student perusing this, you might have similar feelings. On my initial day of moving into accommodation—just a few days before the term officially commenced—I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the most incredible friends I’ve ever known.

The pivotal moment was realizing that everyone else was similarly placed, eager to forge connections yet possibly just as anxious. All it required was a touch of casual conversation and stepping outside my comfort zone. Gradually, I have assembled a second family here at Imperial, both within my program and beyond.

What did I discover? Take that leap early, even if it seems intimidating. If you’re not ready immediately, that’s completely fine—there will be many icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, simply be yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover people who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the elevated complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the subsequent term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others seemingly thriving.

What aided me was the reminder that everyone was navigating the same waters. If I didn’t grasp a concept, it was likely that others were wrestling with it too. The key takeaway? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from fellow classmates or faculty, reaching out can significantly impact your experience.

### The Value of Community and Support

Speaking of faculty, I cannot stress enough how encouraging the Materials department has been. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in our success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. They foster open communication throughout the academic year and are always ready to assist.

I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. One of the best choices I made was becoming a Year Well-Being Representative. This position enabled me to engage with faculty members on a deeper level, which proved immensely beneficial. Whether through formal roles or informal chats, forming relationships with the staff is one of the best steps you can take for your well-being.

My most substantial insight? Utilize the resources and support networks offered to you. There’s no limit to the help you can seek, and it’s provided for a purpose.

### Insights Gained

Upon reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to recognize that many of the anxieties I harbored—both prior to commencing university and throughout the year—were largely unfounded. With the extensive support from both staff and peers, I learned that I was never truly alone.

This year has imparted lessons on how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment. It has been a voyage of self-exploration, growth, and embracing new challenges.

To anyone on the cusp of beginning their university adventure: take that plunge, be authentic, and don’t be reluctant to reach out for help. You’ve got this!
