**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my first year as a student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted, plunging into such a new and demanding setting felt daunting. Reflecting on the year now, I recognize a journey filled with growth, challenges, and ample enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

A significant challenge I encountered was the pursuit of friendship. If you are a prospective student reading this, you may feel similarly. On my initial day in student housing, just days prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too anxious to emerge and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced.

The pivotal moment arose when I made the decision to take a chance and strike up small conversations with those who were also feeling apprehensive. Gradually, these exchanges evolved into genuine friendships, and I now view my friends at Imperial as a second family.

What have I learned from this? First and foremost, stepping out of your comfort zone early is worthwhile. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous introductory events and occasions to engage with others. Second, simply be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals at university, you are certain to encounter others who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Demands

Another significant obstacle was acclimating to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was quite pronounced, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more demanding. It’s natural to feel swamped and question your abilities, particularly when observing others studying and appearing to excel.

What aided me in overcoming this was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial point is to seek assistance—whether it be from classmates or faculty members. Developing the skill to seek support is arguably the most essential ability you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

Regarding support, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They truly desire for students to succeed and empathize with the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication and were consistently ready to assist.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the year was nearing its end, and I regret not doing so earlier. At the beginning of the year, I assumed the position of a well-being representative for my year, which provided me with the chance to build connections with the staff. This turned out to be immensely beneficial, as it fostered a greater sense of connection and support.

If I were to impart one piece of advice, it would be to leverage the available support. Whether it’s academic guidance, pastoral care, or simply getting acquainted with your instructors, there’s no such thing as too much support.

### Insights Gained

Upon reflection, this year has imparted numerous lessons. The apprehension I felt before and during the university experience was largely unwarranted. There exists an abundance of support from both faculty and fellow students to assist you in overcoming any hurdles.

Most importantly, I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly alone. Even amid the pressures of exams and deadlines, I’ve discovered ways to relish my time and maximize my university experience.

To those preparing to commence their university journey: take that leap, welcome the challenges, and don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance. You’ll be astonished by the growth you can achieve in just one year.
