**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who has always been introverted and reserved, venturing into the unfamiliar was daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with personal growth, challenges, and countless memorable experiences, I realize just how much I’ve gained and the distance I’ve traveled.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships

One of the most daunting parts of starting university was the prospect of forging new friendships. If you are an incoming student, this concern might resonate with you. On my first day in student housing, I spent hours sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve established some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known—friends who truly feel like family.

How did I achieve this? It all began with casual conversations and reaching out to those in similar situations. My key takeaway? Embark on that leap of faith from the start. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be ample icebreaker events and opportunities to engage with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse student body, you’ll surely connect with those who share your passions and beliefs.

### Addressing the Academic Struggles

Adjusting to the rigorous academic demands and the heightened complexity of university-level material was another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was distinct, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others studying intensely and wonder if you’re doing enough.

What assisted me in navigating these challenges? Remembering that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re finding it hard to grasp a concept, it’s likely others are too. The crucial part is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most beneficial skill you can cultivate in your first year.

### Fostering Relationships with Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is remarkable. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about students’ success and understand the hurdles we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year, addressing our worries and providing assistance.

While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I regret not reaching out sooner. Early on, I stepped up by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to form connections with staff members. This proved to be an invaluable experience. Whether through formal roles or informal chats, getting to know your lecturers and tutors is one of the most beneficial things you can do for your personal growth. My advice? Utilize the support and resources available—you can never receive too much help!

### Insights Gained

Upon reflection, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was frequently unwarranted. With an extensive array of support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly on my own. I’ve acquired the ability to balance exam stress and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and relaxation.

This journey has been one of self-exploration, growth, and connection. If you are preparing to begin your university experience, understand that feeling anxious is perfectly normal. But also realize that with time, support, and the courage to take small steps, you will discover your niche and flourish.
