**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the future. I was about to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unknown felt quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I can appreciate just how much I’ve gained and how far I’ve progressed.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. Beginning university can feel overwhelming, and if you’re a future student reading this, it’s likely a concern you share. On my first day in student housing, a few days prior to the official start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to today, and I can assert that I’ve made some of the greatest friends I’ve ever known. Here at Imperial, I discovered a second family—individuals who share my hobbies and support me. It all commenced with small actions, like sparking casual chats with others who were just as apprehensive as I was.
What did I learn? Taking an early leap of faith is vital. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Above all, remain authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who connect with you.
### Addressing the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the course materials. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt especially tough. It’s easy to feel inundated and doubt your capabilities when you observe others studying and apparently thriving.
What assisted me in overcoming these feelings was realizing that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re finding something difficult, the chances are that others are too. The essential lesson is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or the faculty. Learning to ask for help is one of the most valuable lessons I acquired during my initial year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
The faculty in the Materials department are remarkable. They truly desire for students to succeed and empathize with the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and provided unwavering support.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the year’s end, I wish I had done so earlier. Initially, I took a leap by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to forge connections with faculty members. This turned out to be an invaluable experience. There are countless ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My greatest takeaway? Utilize the resources and support available to you—there is no such thing as too much help!
### Insights Gained
Looking back on this year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. With the extensive array of support options provided by both faculty and fellow students, assistance is always available when needed.
This year has taught me that I’m never truly alone, even during moments of doubt or pressure. It’s demonstrated how to balance the demands of exams and deadlines while savoring life at university. Most importantly, it’s been a period of personal development, and I look forward to what lies ahead.
