**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

About ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nervousness, dread, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was about to start my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been an introverted individual, diving headfirst into this new environment felt far outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with growth, challenges, and happiness, I can affirm that it has been a life-changing journey. But what insights have I gained, and where do I currently stand?

### Confronting the Challenge of Friendships

One of the most intimidating elements of beginning university was the quest for friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, you might resonate with those feelings. On my very first day in student housing, just days prior to the term’s start, I remained in my room the entire time, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I’m thrilled to report that I’ve established some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

A pivotal moment occurred when I chose to engage in light conversation with others who were feeling similarly apprehensive. That straightforward action paved the way for the formation of my second family here at Imperial. What did I take away from this experience? Taking a leap of faith at the beginning of the year pays off. If you don’t feel prepared or comfortable immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most significantly, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Transition

Another major challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more daunting. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your abilities when you observe others studying and seemingly thriving.

What aided me in this struggle was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely others are too. The essential strategy is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or teaching personnel. Learning to ask for help may be the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.

### The Supportive Staff

On the subject of support, the personnel in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely care about our success and demonstrate understanding towards the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open dialogue with us and were always ready to address our concerns.

Though I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not having done so sooner. One of the finest choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to create connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. Whether through formal roles or casual exchanges, getting acquainted with the staff is among the best things you can do for yourself. My most significant takeaway? Make the most of the support offered to you—there’s no such thing as too much help.

### Insights Gained

All in all, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt before and during my time at university was largely unnecessary. With the wealth of support available from both staff and peers, I’ve come to realize that I am never truly alone. Additionally, I’ve learned how to enjoy my time while managing the inevitable pressures of examinations and deadlines.

Looking back, I can see the progress I’ve made—not just in academics, but also in personal growth. This year has been a journey of development, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead.
