**Residing in London: Nine Months of Reflections**
*By Harsh Gupta, MSc. Advanced Materials Science and Engineering*

Nearly nine months ago, I began my adventure of living in London. Although this may not sound like a lengthy period, it has provided me with valuable experiences about life in this vibrant metropolis. London serves not only as a center for varied accommodation choices but also as a melting pot of lively communities. For students, the city presents numerous options, ranging from student residences to private lodgings, including ensuite and shared baths, private and communal rooms, studio flats, and shared houses.

For domestic students, arranging apartment viewings is relatively simple. Conversely, international students can depend on websites such as Rightmove, Zoopla, and SpareRoom to investigate housing options online. These sites offer information about amenities, closeness to public transport, and other vital details, facilitating the process for individuals relocating from other countries.

### Locating a Place to Call Home

Throughout my search for accommodation, I focused on securing a room in Central London. Being near main attractions, social centers, and the campus of Imperial College was crucial to me. The city is segmented into six concentric zones, with the first two being the most central. The outstanding transport network—comprising the Underground (tube), buses, and trains—enables easy movement across these zones.

Nonetheless, travel expenses can accumulate quickly. For example, traveling between zones can cost as much as £5.25 every day. To economize, I chose to walk short distances instead of depending on public transit. For lengthier journeys, the Oyster card provides reduced fare options, making it a budget-friendly option for students. Moreover, the London Overground and National Rail services extend beyond the Underground system, reaching areas outside Central London. Fares for these services differ based on distance and the pricing system of the train operator.

Residing in Central London has its advantages, but it also comes with steep living costs. To keep expenditures down, I shared a room with a friend, which considerably lowered our rent. I selected intercollegiate student accommodation because I aimed to connect with peers from various backgrounds and similar age groups—something that private rentals might not facilitate as conveniently.

### Close to Essentials

For me, being near grocery stores was essential. Some of the ubiquitous supermarkets in London include Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Co-op, while budget-friendly chains like Aldi, Lidl, and Iceland are also well-liked. Proximity to necessary stores and pharmacies is extremely beneficial, particularly during hectic times such as exams.

### Selecting the Right Neighborhood

Choosing a neighborhood in London is quite a challenge, as the city’s ethnic communities play a significant role in its cultural identity. Numerous international students tend to gravitate toward areas that mirror the familiarity of their home nations.

For example:
– **Southall** in West London is renowned for its substantial South Asian community, featuring Indian restaurants, grocery shops, and traditional clothing retailers.
– **Brixton**, situated in South London, is famous for its Afro-Caribbean community and vibrant music culture.
– **Chinatown**, located in the bustling West End of London, is a lively enclave brimming with Chinese restaurants, shops, and cultural activities.

These neighborhoods represent just a few examples of the rich cultural diversity that London presents.

### Concluding Thoughts

The ideal area to reside in London ultimately hinges on your personal preferences and requirements. Whether you’re navigating the city’s various accommodation choices, immersing yourself in its cultural neighborhoods, or appreciating the convenience of its public transport, London offers something for everyone. Embrace the diversity and take full advantage of this extraordinary city—it’s an experience unlike any other.
