**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and ambiguity as I got ready to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Stepping into the unknown was a significant departure from the shy and introverted person I used to be. Now, as I reflect on this past academic year, I recognize it as a time of substantial personal development, obstacles, and countless joyful moments. So, what have I gained from this experience, and what is my current status?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered at the beginning of my university journey was the challenge of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this could be one of your main worries as well. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day cooped up in my room, too scared to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say that I have forged some of the deepest friendships I’ve ever experienced—friends who feel like a second family.

What shifted? It began with light conversations and connecting with others who were experiencing the same feelings as me. I discovered that taking an early risk is essential. If you’re not ready or at ease initially, it’s okay—there will be numerous icebreakers and activities designed to bring people together. Most significantly, I realized that being authentic is the best way to approach these new connections. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adjusting to the Academic Environment

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the volume of work and the complexity of the curriculum. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the leap from the first term to the second proved even more significant. It’s natural to feel inundated or question your capabilities, particularly when observing others seemingly mastering their studies.

What really assisted me was the understanding that everyone faces similar challenges. If you’re finding it tough to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial lesson is to seek assistance—whether from peers or faculty members. Cultivating the ability to ask for help is arguably one of the most vital skills to nurture during your first year.

### The Significance of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is remarkable. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. They maintain accessible communication throughout the year and are consistently ready to assist.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until the year was nearing its end, and I wish I had utilized it sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to foster relationships with faculty, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are various ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Avail yourself of the support at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting back, this year has taught me that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to commencing university and throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. There are numerous support systems available, from faculty to fellow students, to help you navigate any difficulties. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone and that it is feasible to manage the stress from exams and deadlines while still enjoying moments of leisure and happiness.

As I progress, I’m thankful for the personal development, friendships, and experiences that have contributed to my first year at Imperial. To anyone gearing up to begin their own journey, my advice is straightforward: take that risk, embrace the support that surrounds you, and most importantly, stay true to yourself.
