**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Venturing into unfamiliar territory was not something my previously shy and introverted self had ever experienced. Now, reflecting on a year filled with academic growth, hurdles, and lots of enjoyable moments, I find myself contemplating the lessons learned and the progress made.
### Taking the Step to Form Connections
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered early on was forging friendships. Commencing university can be quite overwhelming, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it may resonate as one of your principal concerns. On my first day in student housing—just days before the term officially commenced—I spent the entirety of the day secluding myself in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, particularly in my program, I’ve discovered a second family. All it took was stepping beyond my comfort zone and striking up conversations with others navigating similar experiences.
So, what has been my takeaway? I recognized that making that initial leap is always beneficial. If you feel hesitant or unsettled, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker functions and chances to engage with others. Most significantly, I realized that authenticity is the best strategy. With such a varied community throughout the course and university, you’re bound to encounter individuals who share your interests and values.
### Confronting the Academic Demands
Another major challenge was acclimating to the coursework and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more demanding. Being in such an intense environment can occasionally undermine your self-esteem, particularly when you observe others studying and feel like you’re lagging behind.
What aided me during these challenging times was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something is unclear, chances are high that others are grappling with it as well. The critical takeaway is to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson I garnered during my first year—don’t hesitate to reach out for support from your peers and teachers.
### Guidance from Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is remarkable. The instructors and tutors truly want to see you prosper, and they acknowledge the hurdles students encounter. Throughout the academic year, they maintained open channels of communication with us and demonstrated understanding towards our challenges.
I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative. This position provided me with the chance to build connections with faculty members, which proved to be immensely valuable. There are countless avenues to foster relationships with staff, and I wholeheartedly recommend pursuing this—it’s among the best decisions you can make for yourself.
My key takeaway here is to utilize the support systems accessible to you. Whether you need academic assistance, pastoral support, or just want to seek advice from someone, you’ll find that having ample support is invaluable.
### Insights Gained
This year has demonstrated to me that much of the anxiety I experienced—both prior to commencing university and throughout the year—was largely unwarranted. With the extensive range of support options provided by staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment, while also growing in ways I never anticipated.
Looking back, I take pride in my journey. For anyone preparing to start their own university experience, my message is straightforward: take that plunge, be true to yourself, and don’t shy away from asking for assistance. You can do this!
