**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the path ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into the depths of university life appeared intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I recognize how life-altering this experience has been. So, what insights have I gained, and where am I now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting challenges of entering university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re a future student, this might be a significant concern for you as well. On my initial day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve established some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
The essential strategy was to take gradual steps—striking up casual conversations with those who were feeling just as apprehensive. As time passed, these connections blossomed into a second family here at Imperial. My recommendation? Take that plunge early. Even if you don’t feel entirely prepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and events aimed at facilitating your connection with others. Most importantly, just remain yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals at the university, you’re sure to discover those who coincide with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Challenges
Adapting to the academic workload and intensity was another notable challenge. The leap from A-levels to university-level studies was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt particularly intense. It’s simple to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others studying and wondering if you’re doing enough.
What proved most beneficial for me was the reminder that everyone is facing the same challenges. If you’re struggling with a concept, chances are others are too. The most effective course of action is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty members. Learning to ask for help is likely the most essential skill you can acquire in your first year.
### The Significance of Support Systems
Speaking of assistance, the support from the Materials department staff has been outstanding. They sincerely desire for students to succeed and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and were always willing to address our concerns.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until late in the year, and I regret not doing so sooner. Early on, I took the initiative by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to form relationships with staff members. This experience proved to be incredibly valuable. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway? Utilize the support systems available to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
As I reflect on my first year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during university—was often unwarranted. Numerous resources and support networks exist to assist students in navigating challenges. I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to strike a balance between enjoying myself and managing the inevitable stress of exams and deadlines.
This year has been a journey of growth, and I am thankful for the lessons it has imparted to me. For anyone about to embark on a similar journey, remember that while the path might appear intimidating at the outset, it is brimming with opportunities for connection, growth, and self-discovery.
