**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was set to embark on my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had long been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unfamiliar felt extremely intimidating. Now, reflecting on my first year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered was establishing friendships. For numerous newcomers, this can be one of the most anxiety-inducing parts of starting university. On my first day in student housing, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too intimidated to venture out and meet others.

Now, as I look back, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships in my life. The individuals I’ve connected with here—both in my program and throughout the university—have become like a second family. It all commenced with small gestures, like initiating discussions with others who felt equally anxious.

What takeaway do I have from this? Taking that first step is vital. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to mingle. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a rich and diverse community at Imperial, you’re likely to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Addressing Academic Hurdles
Another major challenge was adapting to the new workload and the heightened difficulty of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was noticeably significant, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more drastic. It’s easy to feel inundated and question your capabilities in the presence of high-achieving peers.

What aided me during this time was the understanding that I wasn’t isolated in my struggles. Everyone was navigating similar challenges, and if I was having trouble grasping a concept, it’s likely others were too. The important lesson? Don’t shy away from seeking assistance. Whether it’s your classmates or the faculty, reaching out for help can tremendously alter your experience.

### The Significance of Caring Staff
On the topic of support, the educators in the Materials Science department have been exceptional. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and understand the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and were consistently available to address our worries.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the available support until late in the year, I wish I’d engaged with it sooner. One of my best decisions was to serve as a year wellbeing representative. This position enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are many avenues for engaging with staff, and utilizing them can significantly enhance your university journey. My suggestion? Capitalize on available support systems—you can never have excessive assistance!

### Insights Gained
Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to realize that a lot of the anxieties I held—both prior to and during university—were not justified. With the extensive support provided by both staff and fellow students, I was never truly alone. This year has taught me how to manage stress from exams and deadlines while cherishing moments of happiness and personal development.

Ultimately, university encompasses more than just academics. It represents a path of self-exploration, forging connections, and embracing challenges. To anyone about to embark on their own university journey: take that leap, remain true to yourself, and keep in mind that support is always accessible.
