**Contemplations on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was just about to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new phase was quite intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a significant period of personal development, challenges, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This might also be among your major worries as a prospective student. On my first day in student housing, just days ahead of classes starting, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, feeling too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve built some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. My friends here have become my second family, and all it took was venturing outside my comfort zone and initiating simple conversations with others who felt as anxious as I did.
What did I learn from this? Taking that first leap of faith at the beginning of the year is vital. If you’re not quite ready from the outset, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Above all, just be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of university-level studies was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first semester to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you see classmates studying and seemingly thriving.
What aided me in this was realizing that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling with something, it’s likely that others are as well. The essential strategy is to seek assistance—whether from your peers or the teaching staff. This may be the most important skill to nurture during your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Staff
Speaking of staff, the Materials Science department at Imperial is truly remarkable. The lecturers and tutors genuinely prioritize student success and understand the challenges we encounter. They keep open lines of communication throughout the year and are always available to address our concerns.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the bold steps I took early, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. It enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway here? Utilize the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve learned that the anxiety I felt before starting university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. There are abundant resources and support systems available, from faculty to fellow students, to assist you in overcoming any hurdles. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve figured out how to enjoy myself while managing the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
As I progress, I feel increasingly confident and equipped for what lies ahead. If you are about to embark on your own university adventure, know that it’s natural to feel apprehensive—but also understand that you will grow, adapt, and flourish in ways you never anticipated.
