**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new phase was intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the previous academic year, I recognize a time of significant growth, challenges, and cherished memories. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. For numerous incoming students, this is one of the largest worries when commencing university, and I was no different. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days prior to the semester officially starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to my peers.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both within my program and throughout the university—have become a second family to me. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversation with others who were feeling just as I was.
What have I gleaned? Taking that first step at the onset of the year is essential. If you’re not ready immediately, don’t fret—there are numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to meet new people. Above all, be yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Managing the Academic Shift
Adjusting to the demands and academic intensity of university was another major obstacle. The leap from A-levels to higher education was stark, and the transition from the first semester to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become inundated and question your capabilities, particularly when you observe your peers studying and wonder if you’re keeping pace.
What assisted me in navigating this challenge was the understanding that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you don’t grasp a concept, there’s a good chance others are battling with it as well. The vital thing is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or teaching staff. Learning to ask for help may be the most crucial skill to cultivate in your initial year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of support, the faculty members in the Materials Science and Engineering department have been outstanding. They truly wish for students to thrive and are sympathetic to the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open communication with us and actively responded to our issues.
While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had utilized it earlier. Early on, I stepped up by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to establish connections with staff members. This experience proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I experienced—both before and during university—was primarily unwarranted. With the abundant support available from staff and fellow students, I was rarely alone. I’ve learned how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with enjoyable moments.
This initial year has been a transformative experience, and I’m eager to discover what the future brings. To anyone getting ready to embark on their own university journey: tackle the challenges head-on, seek support when necessary, and remember to savor the experience.
