**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was about to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been shy and introverted, plunging into this new phase felt quite daunting. Now, reflecting on the previous academic year, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and many unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. Beginning university can be intimidating, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it might be one of your greatest concerns as well. On my first day in student housing, just a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve met here—both in my program and throughout the university—have become a second family to me. It all commenced with small initial steps, like engaging in light conversations with those who were feeling the same way I was.

What did I glean from this? Taking that first leap of faith is consistently worthwhile. If you’re not quite prepared right off the bat, don’t fret—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Above all, just be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter people who align with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Trials
Adapting to the demands and complexities of university-level material was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and doubt your abilities, particularly when observing others studying and apparently thriving.

What assisted me in persevering was recognizing that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something confusing, chances are there are others who feel the same. The essential part is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the teaching staff. Learning to ask for help may be the most crucial skill you can acquire in your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Staff
Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials department are fantastic. They genuinely care about student success and empathize with the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our worries and offering guidance.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered to me until late in the year, and I regret not reaching out sooner. Becoming a year well-being representative was one of the proactive steps I took early on, and it proved to be a rewarding endeavor. It enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which I highly recommend. There are numerous opportunities to interact with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your experience. My foremost takeaway? Fully utilize the support systems at your disposal—there’s no such thing as too much assistance.

### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this past year, I realize that many of the fears I harbored—both prior to and during university—were unfounded. With the comprehensive support from both staff and fellow students, those anxieties became manageable. I’ve learned that I’m never truly isolated, and I’ve discovered ways to balance having fun with the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.

In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a transformative journey. It has been a path of growth, connectivity, and learning to tackle challenges head-on. To any prospective students reading this: take the plunge, stay true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You’ve got this!
